Receive Our Newsletter and Important Updates by e-mail!

To receive the newsletter by e-mail and to receive e-mail information updates please register your e-mail address on our website at: newtonma.gov/mlss Sign up for e-mail updates on the Newton website. Department of Senior Services/ Newton Senior Center list is administered by the Newton Senior Center. It is intended primarily to deliver the monthly newsletter to subscribers although we may offer important emergency updates to the members of the list. Frequency of the newsletter is once each month.

In case of bad weather…

Call the center main line, 617-796-1660 after 7:00am. The message will tell you that either : We are closed for the day…. or , We are having a delayed opening or , the message will be our usual message in which case , we will be open as always.

If schools are closed we are closed... BUT sometimes we are closed when schools are open. Be sure to check before venturing out! (No announcement will be made on TV or radio).

IF your class is canceled and you are one of our "eight week' or "4 week" classes, it will be made up by adding on at the end of the session. If you are a weekly class that runs continually you will meet at the next scheduled meeting.

 Pink Ribbon Program

 

A Pilates-based Program offering Strength, Self-esteem and Quality of Life to Breast Cancer Survivors

 

  • Small group sessions of 8 women who are post surgery… weeks to years!
  • All participants must register by getting a form from Joanne Fisher, Newton Senior Center
  • To complete registration a doctor’s note and short interview with the teacher is required.
  • Classes to run in 8-week sessions:
  • Other sessions to follow.


1:15-2:15 Wednesdays

  • Classes will only be held if 8 persons register and pay in advance……. $125 per 8-week session
  • Registration due by January 11… no refunds after that date unless space is filled by another student. (Wait list will be kept for this purpose.)
  • Exercise goal is to restore full range-of-motion by strengthening and stretching muscles affected by Breast Cancer Surgery
  • Taught by (Pink Ribbon) certified teacher and fitness instructor Robin Resnick.
  • All classes held at the Newton Senior Center…

Tax Season Ahead!

 

The Newton Senior Center in conjunction with AARP (Association of Older Americans) is getting ready to help you prepare your taxes for filing.  The senior center will begin accepting calls to make appointments on January 23.  The actual appointments will be scheduled to begin on February 6. 

· Please do not schedule an appointment until you have all of the necessary documents.

· Appointments are held during the center’s regular hours of operation: 8:30-4:00pm.

· Those eligible must be 50 years or older.

· Non-Newton residents will be placed on a wait list and called only if appointments  become available.

· Complex returns will be referred to private tax-preparers.

· Returns will be promptly e-filed.

· The tax aides working on the forms have been trained by AARP  and are volunteers.

· Those wishing to make a donation to the senior center in thanks for this service may do so by writing a check to the Newton Senior Center and leaving it in the office on the Mezzanine  .

Find out about this wonderful new way to exercise YOUR BODY AND YOUR BRAIN. For an enticing demonstration of the Wii drop-in on Monday, 9-11a.m. Do it sitting or standing… just do it!

 

Book Review

Maura Copeland of the Newton Free Library is at the Newton Senior Center on the second Monday of each month to present a Book Review, from 2:30-3:30. All welcome!

Did you know?

The Newton Senior Center programs and services are designed for those 50 years old to 100+. Some programs are funded by grants that set limits with other age restrictions. Read carefully to make sure you do not miss out on something you qualify for… and don't be shy about stopping by the center to check out the action. “It's not your grandmother's senior center anymore!”

 

Six Degrees of Separation

This networking and support group for those who are currently seeking employment, meets every Friday morning from 9-10:30 a.m. at the senior center.

 

The Veteran's History Project

This project sponsored by The Library of Congress, is an effort to preserve the history of our veterans and the civilians that supported our war efforts from WWI to Iraq and Afghanistan. For an appointment to tell your story, have it transcribed and saved by writer David O'Neil, call Joanne at 617-796-1670.

Council on Aging

The Council on Aging (COA) is a group of interested volunteers, appointed by the mayor, to serve the needs of and improve the quality of life for all Newton Seniors focusing on advocacy education, outreach, and legislation. The Council on Aging is composed of 9 commissioners and 29 Advisory Board members. Among the members are citizens and service providers. They support the work and mission of the other components of the department as well as act as citizen advocates. Learn the Computer and Connect

The Newton Senior Center offers computer lessons to senior citizens wishing to stay connected through modern technology. If you are a computer user wishing to increase your skills or a beginner wanting to learn to use a computer, simply call Joanne at 617-796-1670, and hop on the technology highway! Our lessons are tutorial style (1 student/1 teacher) and take place at the center. We ask $50 for 6 lessons or $10 per lesson. Students are required to have access to a computer at home so they can practice daily. Computers available on site for lessons.
