Beat the Heat

When temperatures rise above 90 for several days in a row, you need to protect yourself from the heat.  We are issuing these reminders, which especially apply to older and very young individuals and to those with any special conditions.  Follow these “stay cool” tips:

  • Drink plenty of nonalcoholic fluids. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink. If your doctor limits your fluid intake, ask how much you should drink when the weather is hot.
  • Wear lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothing.
  • Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • NEVER leave people or pets in a closed, parked vehicle. Temperatures in enclosed spaces rise very quickly.
  • Check on neighbors who may need additional help.
  • Stay in air conditioned spaces.

The Newton Free Library is available as a cool down center during normal operating hours
Monday -Thursday 9am - 9pm
Fri 9am - 6pm
Saturday 9am - 5pm
Closed Sundays during July & August

When the Library is closed, those needing relief from the heat can go to one of the two Newton malls.

For residents 60 and over, the Newton Senior Center can provide transportation to the library or one of the malls, if needed.  To arrange for transportation, please call 617-796-1288.

Signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke include: nausea or vomiting, headache, dizziness, confusion, rapid pulse, high body temperature, muscle cramps, and lack of sweating. Seek help if you suspect heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
